Sun mouse problems

We have had several Sun mice die on us in the past few months.  They all
exhibit the same symptoms: horizontal mouse motion is either completely
dead or sporadic at best.  Vertical motion is fine.

This is obviously related to the batch of bad Sun mice from Aug - Sept. 1990.
I would like to repair the mice.  Does anyone know exactly what part has
gone bad?  Any other tips would be welcomed too.  Thanks.
