Password Change Problems

I am running a small network with an IPC serving two SLCs (all running 4.1).
All of the machines are /etc/hosts to each other and I have the IPC running
NIS as the master server. The NIS is probably not setup correctly although
ypinit -m does not give me any errors. In any case NIS is probably not
necessary on this network and I will probably ditch it.

The problem that I have is that none of the machines recognize password changes.
Currently I have one id that doesn't have a password. I have used passwd and
yppasswd(which one should I be using?--My knowledge of NIS is very poor) to
change the password. This works all fine and dandy asking me for a new
passwd. If I check with vipw to the /etc/passwd file or looking at
/var/yp/yppasswd a password exists for this id. If I try logging in however,
the machine does not ask for a password.

What am I missing?
