Practical experience with C++

We are seriously considering C++ for some R&D development and I would
be very keen to hear about other peoples experiences with this
language.  Areas which particularly interest us are: scale of projects
which have used this language, any problems with portability and/or 
performance and any general comments on the advantages/disadvantages
of C++ over standard C.
