In response to Bjorn Freeman-Benson's note on optimizing C compilers, there is a VERY good compiler sold by Tartan Labs, Pittsburgh PA 15213. I have seen programs run 10-35% faster with Tartan's compiler, and some of the code it generates is very impressive. It is a true optimizing compiler, not a hokey post processor. And, no, they didn't pay me to say this.
