MSC 5.1 and Memory size modules

I'm a new user of MSC 5.1 and I'm having a little bit of trouble
with the memory module size concept.
I'm porting a program from another platform under the GEM environment
to run on the IBM under the GEM environment.
I'm compiling on the IBM using the large memory size.  However, I need
to allocate a contiguous space of over 70K.  The actual allocation seems
to be working ok with use of the halloc.  But, when I try to point within
the allocated area, the system hangs.  The pointers and counters used to
access within the area are established as huges.  There must be something
simple I'm missing.
Can anyone help shed some light?

Does it matter where within a program huges are established?
