C expertise

One of the (early) levels of C expertise should be :

- Is comfortable enough with malloc() that they don't need to
  set arbitrary limits such as MAX_STRINGS in arrays.
  i.e. use:
  float * float_ptr;
  and malloc() appropriate space (determined at run-time)
  instead of:
  float float_array[MAX_ITEMS];
