Thanks everybody for your very helpful responses!  I have pointers
straightened out in my head once and for all.  My choice of "duh" was 
indeed appropriate...  :-)

A couple of people have mentioned the ANSI function strupr(), where can I 
get an "official" implementation of this?  Is there one?  Some "official"
implementations of ANSI functions seem to exist, such as strftime().
