			ADVANCED TUTORIALS
                At the EUUG Copenhagen Conference

On Tuesday September 10, there will be something new on EUUG conferences
namely advanced seminars held in conjunction with the conference, in
cooperation with professional international tutorial establishments.

These seminars give you a unique opportunity to obtain an extra benefit
from your Copenhagen trip.

The seminar instructors are recognised experts on the topics they teach.
In addition to this, they are all experienced teachers, and will provide
a detailed set of course notes with each seminar.

Actually it is two of the most recognised professional UNIX tutorial
establishments in the world who have made agreements with EUUG on
advanced tutorials for this occasion fit for the level of EUUG members.

International Technical Seminars (ITS) is a Los Angeles, USA based firm
founded by Jim Joyce, and counting such prominent UNIX'ers as
Steve Bourne, Kirk McKusick and Ken Arnold on its strong team of
teachers (well, I cannot mention all of you, and I do not have the
list present).

The Instruction Set (Inset) is based in London, GB and have given
UNIX courses to people all over Europe. The Instruction Set features
the well known EUUG'ers Mike Banahan and Nigel Martin along with
other well reputated :-) professional instructors.

The advanced tutorial sessions are:

1) Jim Joyce (International Technical Seminars):
UNIX System V Administration and Overview
This will be a full day seminar. See description below.

2) Rich Morin (Canta Forda Computer Lab, Walnut Creek, Ca / ITS):
   Fast prototyping techniques
This will be a full day seminar. See description below.

3) The Instruction Set: Yacc - Lex

4) The Instruction Set: Writing Device Drivers

5) The Instruction Set: Unix System 5.3 overview

The three Instruction Set tutorials will be one hour each and are
scheduled after each other in time Tuesday morning the 10th September.
Please refer to the conference time table.

Note that on this very same day, the first day of industrial sessions
will be held in the afternoon, making that a full day extra for the
congress fee, compared to other EUUG conferences.

Descriptions of the ITS advanced tutorials follow:

Seminar 1: UNIX System V administration and overview
	   Jim Joyce,
International Technical Seminars, San Francisco, Ca., USA

This course is designed to introduce essential tools that make
the UNIX system administration for System V more efficient
and secure. Among the topics are: shell scripts for effective
system maintenance, monitoring files that grow automatically,
customised system management, correct selection of system
	   permissions, device configuration.

Attendees need have some experience as a system administrator.
This is a full day seminar.

Jim Joyce founded ITS in 1980, after teaching computer science
for seven years at the University of California at Berkeley.
In 1974, he became one of the first advocates of UNIX outside
Bell Laboratories, when he gave the first tutorials at Berkeley.

Seminar 2: Fast Prototyping Techniques
	   Rich Morin,
Canta Forda Computer Lab, Walnut Creek, Ca., USA

This course learns to combine tools with proven techniques
to do fast prototyping under UNIX, saving month in production time.
UNIX' powerful toolkit of utilities link together in a pipeline
or in a shell script, to create applications in a fraction of
the time it would take to code the equivalent functionality in C.
	   Among the topics: packaging: from prototype to production model;
application design tactics in the UNIX environment; idioms:
	   shortcuts to results; channeling data flow effectively;
	   debugging tips and techniques.

Attendees must have quite some UNIX programming experience, and
have some knowledge of AWK, SED and the Shell.
This is a full day seminar

Rich Morin is an independent computer consultant specializing in
scientific and engineering UNIX applications. He writes "the
Human Factor" for the 'UNIX Review' magazine.

Please note that the seminars will be given on the day before the start
of the technical conference program (Tuesday).

The fee for the full day ITS tutorials will be DKK 1.500,- for EUUG
members and DKK 1.700,- for non-members; materials, lunch and coffee
included. This is a special price that EUUG managed to get through
with ITS, in the U.S.A. ITS takes USD 335 for such a full day tutorial
which is about 3 times as much.

The one-hour Instruction Set tutorials are included
in the conference registration fee, but please indicate if you would
like to attend them for the sake of the arrangement. And please note
that no lunch is provided (except for ITS participants) Tuesday,
but coffee is.

Have a look at the conference time table to see how these
tutorials fit with the rest of your programme.
