collapsing still

Nethack Version 3.0, patchlevel 5

this has happened innumerable times, and is really frustrating.

i start to play a game i had saved, and it says "there seems to 
be an old save file. rewrite it?" (among other things, along 
with "what are you?" and something like "freeinv") but no
matter what i say, it says no, and lists my "score" thusly:
Goodbye Bee the ...
(lists of scores)
bee       killed by a level 1 panic


now, apart from this, there seems to be a problem with levels
that is equally as maddening. i will have a great game going, and step
onto, say, level 6, but decide to go back to 5 to get something.
nope, it says "report errors and it may be possible to rebuild"
(that same damn messae occurs in both problems).

ARGH! what do i do?
