<math.h> in XPG3

It seems that X/Open requires the implementation to provide a log-gamma
function in the math library, using *both* names `gamma()' and `lgamma()',
with identical semantics.  What on earth is the point?  Why didn't they just
pick one of them as the standard name, and let the other faction convert their
code?
