We did, at one point, consider making such a beast.  Alas, my pet project
was not to be.  I would have enjoyed such a project a lot.  I have a
project proposal that I wrote up.  It may not be very useful to you,
but if you're curious about what type of design I envisioned, I can
mail a copy (or post it if enough people are interested).
