UNIX PC's automatic mail daemon

We are using elm on UNIX PC's and want to turn off the
daemon that works the UNIX PC mail since it looses it half
the time.  However, I cannot identify the process which calls
up the mail notification on the machine and gives the user the
option to read his mail immediately.  Where is it located?  In
which program?  Thanks
