kermit-modem problems on 3b1

i have gotten C-kermit 4E(072) and compiled it, after considerable
effort. the results are as follows:

	1) it supports the on board modem perfectly.
but
	2) it hangs on the external modem.

the external modem is a desktalk II 2400 baud hayes-compatible
which is used by one of my main dial-ups. it functions perfectly
with cu and uucp, and i have a funcitoninx modemcap for this purpose.

i have gone into the sources for c-kermit, and have entered
all the appropriate entries i could find in ckudia.c an recompiled.
before these changes it wouldn't dial at all. now after i
'set modem desktalk' 'set line /dev/tty000' and 'set speed 2400'
i try 'dial <phone number>'. it responds with the [proper message,
and the modem goes through the same sequence of states (as evidenced
in the front panel lights and the acoustics) througth connecting to
the remote modem. at the point at which i ecpect to be able to hit
some carriage returns and get the signal from the the remote modem, i
find that the keyboard is locked and i cannot enter anything.
meanwhile the remote does seem to be sending material at times,
again as evidenced by the lights on the modem.

any suggestions as to why kermit locks like this? what signal is it
awaiting which it is not getting, and where this should be inserted in
the sources?
