new version of TeX for the 3b1

I've recompiled TeX with some larger internal table sizes, notably the
pool/string size, and the number of macros. With this larger tex it is
possible to use the Mittlebach-Scho"pf font selection scheme and hence
AMS-LaTeX as well. If you don't want this, there's no reason to get
the newer distribution, as nothing else has changed. There's a new
format called "latex3" that is LaTeX with the font selection scheme.
The other formats remain unchanged (though the actual disk image is
probably different since it was dumped from a larger initex).

If you want to know more about the font-selection stuff, see TUGboat
volume 11, number 2 (June 1990). This new scheme will likely be used
in the next version of LaTeX (2.10, or maybe 3.0?).

For those who know about this already, latex3 was built with
	fontdef.max
	preload.min
	basefont.tex

If you do want to use the new version of LaTeX, be advised that you'll
probably need the new AMSTeX fonts. All of these things can be found
at you friendly, neighbourhood archive site (including ymir.claremont.edu
and labrea.stanford.edu).

The tex distribution can be obtained from csvax.cs.caltech.edu by
anonymous ftp in pub/TeX-MF-3b1.tar.Z. Since it's big, please don't get
a copy during business hours (8am - 6pm Pacific time)!!!!!!! Also get
pub/TeX-MF-3b1.README which contains the above text as well as the original
posting about tex for the 3b1 (which will help enormously if you don't
know what I'm talking about!).
