Do somthing with a directory besides viewing

The open/alt-open/etc.. rules for directories were originally
interpreted like other files, but are now hard-coded in the
workspace.  Performance increased *dramatically* because directory
rules are used so extensively.  The performance increase was considered
worth the loss of flexibility.

(Page 2-10 of "Programming the IRIS WorkSpace" mentions this.)

I believe the workspace-heads are working on relaxing this condition.
