Accessing remote tape drives

I'm trying to access an 8mm tape unit on a remote Sun ...

% rsh kluso mt -f /dev/rst1 status
Exabyte EXB-8200 8mm tape drive:
   sense key(0x0)= no sense residual= 0 retries= 0
   file no= 0 block no= 0

According to TM, using the -t option I should be able to specify such
a unit:

% mt -t kluso:/dev/rst1 status
kluso:/dev/rst1: I/O error

At least I seem to be able to validate the existence of a drive:

% mt -t kluso:/dev/rst2 status
kluso:/dev/rst2: No such device or address

Of course, I want to eventually use Backup -t to dump to the Sun. I
have a feeling it won't work, I'm wondering why? Do I have to have an 8mm
driver on the local host? If this won't work, why doesn't the documentation say
so? (SGI?)
