gcc problem

I am attempting to compile gcc 1.37 on an Iris 4D/120 running Irix
3.3.1. First I configured for "iris" and then I edited the Makefile
so that a copy alloca.c stolen from gnuemacs is used in the first
build of gcc.

After a while I get the following error:

        cc -c -g   -I. -I. -I./config symout.c
ccom: Error: ./stddef.h, line 12: illegal type combination
       typedef unsigned long size_t;
      -----------------------------^
*** Error code 1

Stop.

Anybody know how to fix this?
