length of SCSI bus inside a Personal IRIS

We are having trouble with the external (centronics) SCSI
on a IRIS 4D/340.  Is there any reason why we cannot connect
and internal ribbon cable from the internal SCSI to a
50-pin centronics connector?  Where is a good place to get
these cables?
