Real Colour to Colormap Conversion?

I have an image in real colour (i.e. 24 bits/pixel) and would like to know
if any algorithm exists to "compress" this to 256 colours so that I can
display it on the Sun.  Please reply by E-MAIL and I will summarise in two
weeks time.
