Auto unmount

In the Sun network I use, we have numerous workstations with their own
disks. Users usually have their home file system mounted on their own
Sun's disk, but each Sun also mounts some other Sun's disks as well.  Each
Sun is shut down each night when its user leaves, so we have problems when
a Sun that has a remote disks mounted tries to access a remote disk that
has been shut off. It's very frustrating to wait minutes for the attempt
to connect to the missing disk to time-out.  Yes, this is a screwed up
network, but it can't be changed.

So my question is: Is there some way that when a machine is halted that it
can notify the other machines on the network to unmount its file system?
If there's any thing like this built into Sun OS, we haven't it found it
yet. I can also imagine having a daemon running waiting for a broadcast
message from the Sun that is being halted.

Has anyone have any suggestions or any software that will do what I need?
