Re: SUN image processing software.

Thanks to those of you that responded. In total there were 8 replies, 5
concerning commercial ones, and 3 free software. The commercial ones are
more or less described in SUN Catalyst - most of them needs a VME based
Sun with special hardware. The free sw runs on Suns/Sunview. The
experience they communicated, was rather limited in most cases, so you
have to draw your own conclusions.

Commercial ones:

* Visilog, Noesis (see Sun Catalyst) - Runs on Sun/Sunview, but supports
also diverse image processing hardware! Fairly easy to include your own
stuff.

* Wave/IDL (see ad in nov/dec 89 Computer in Physics, page 4) Fortran like
system language, user interface SunView/X11 - $2000-$4000.

* Androx (see Sun Catalyst) - HW & SW, VME Sun - $12000.

Freeware:

* ALV, University of Bristol (alv-users-request at cs.bris.ac.uk) > 30
programs working on Sun raster files. 200 users on their mailing list.

* Displaytool, Vanderbild Univ., Nashville, US (hsc at vuse.vanderbilt.edu)
Interactive windowing, ROI histogramming, etc. $135 for non-profit org.

* IRAF, National Optical Astronomy Observatory, Arizona, US
(lytle at noao.edu) Image Reconstruction Analysis Facility - specially
developed for astronomical data analysis. 1 million lines of code - free!
