Sparcstation bad SIMM sockets?

We have a Sparcstation 1+ and recently bought 8 1MB SIMMS for the empty
slots to take the machine from 8MB to 16MB.  The four SIMM slots closest
to the front of the box appear not to work as the memory we put in them
never registers.  We have tried every logical combination of swapping
chips including putting Sun's own SIMMS in those four slots, but no luck.
The back four slots work fine with the same SIMMS, to give a maximum of 12
MB.
