mcl_put error on Sun OS 4.1 (68

I have encountered the following problem on both a Sun 3/50 and a 3/60 I
have upgraded to OS 4.1

The problem did not show up right away but first appeared about 3 weeks
after loading 4.1.  After bringing the machine to a halt for a couple days
it went away. I upgraded the 3/60 a week or so later. Then about two weeks
later both the 3/50 and the 3/60 crashed. They both went into a crash,
start rebooting, crash, start rebooting loop. I eventually got the 3/60 to
stay up long enough to get crash dumps off of it and send them to Sun.

The only way I could make them usable was to reload the OS. I chose to
reload 4.0.3 until I could get some answers from Sun.

Symptoms

Machine suddenly says

Panic: mcl_put error

and crashes

Configuration 

Sun 3/50(Flat Top), 8 MB memory (4 MB Sun + Helios upgrade; problem also
     occured with Helios upgrade removed), 141 MB Sun Disk, Artecon
     QIC-24 tape, Monochrome.

Sun 3/60, 8 MB memory, Sun shoebox with 141 MB disk & QIC-24 tape, Monochrome

Has anybody else seen this? Does anyone know where mcl_put errors come from?
