Disaster recovery of user files

Does anyone know of a software package that can recover files that have
been mistakenly removed or moved by a novice user.  Said package can
either be commercial or public domain.  I've grown weary of users
inadvertently removing their files and would like to have a method to
restore their critical files other than using restore or tar.
