Best backup for Mac/PC to Sun?

We would like to be able to back up Macintoshes and PCs remotely to our
Sun (or to a VAX running VMS).  We have been trying out Retrospect Remote
for the Mac but it seems quite slow.  In fact their own rep said we should
not use the mainframe as a server because it would be too slow.  So does
anybody have any other recommendations for fast reliable remote Mac or PC
backup programs, preferably ones that will allow us to go directly to tape
on our Sun or VAX?
