Tape backups and CTAR

I'm posting this for a friend...

--------

My company currently does backups nightly. Full backups take about
7-8 hours. My boss has asked me to investigate CTAR (and possibly
similar products) in an attempt to shorten this time (giving us a larger
window for the rest of our nightly processing).

So -- does anyone out there know anything about CTAR from Unitrends?
I have their blurb, but I'm wondering how it's different from just
pipping the output from tar into compress and then to tape.

Also, does anyone know of other products that can speed my backups?
Standard SysV products just seem so much slower than they need to be.
(Yes, it *is* nearly a gig of data we're reading/copying to tape, but
still....)

Drop a note to joel at crystal.mn.org if you could -- otherwise ccc will
have to forward it back. Thanks.
