S5V4 backup/restore tape formats

I am interested in finding out about the sys5.4 'backup' tape
formats. I would like to be able to store files on tape in 
such a way that I can retrieve them with the sys5.4 restore 
command.

Does anyone know how backup stores files to tape and the
format of any index or status files it may save to tape.
