Suggestions for backup strategies to high capacity tape drives.

I am looking for suggestions to make backups easier. We have a
DECsystem 5000/Model 200, Ultrix 4.1, TLZ04 (DAT) drive. Since the
capacity is quite high (1.3 GB), it seems foolish to use separate
tapes for each file system.

I am looking for ways to allow operators to do incremental backups
without needing to know about /nmrt?h and using mt (I know, a tall
order). If there are scripts/programs out there to automate this task,
I would appreciate hearing about them (currently full backups are not
a problem).

A second question is whether or not it is necessary to shut down to
single user mode to do the backups. Finally, any hints/suggestion to
maximize use of this drive would be appreciated.
