Configuration Management

I am in the process of developing a set of Configuration Management Guidelines
(CMG) for a number of unix machines. I wish to automate some of the more labor
intensive requirements (such as filling out a form every time something is
changed). I have looked around for a product that will scan a hard disk and
return (through a data base, text file, etc.) that machine's hardware and
software configuration. We are currently using SYS5.

My question is this: Does anyone know of such a program?

Any pointers would be appreciated, and I will summarize of anybody is
interested.
