DAT backups discards

 Is it universal to discard DAT backups after very few uses?

 If there is anybody who discards used DAT backups, I can recycle them to 
backup my DAT master recordings (music) and would provide mailer, postage, 
(and tapes) to anyone who might be throwing some away.
