search order for resolving names on the net

I using  a nameserver in our domain from my RS6000. I have found 
that first the nameserver is contacted for resolving a name. 
Is there any possibility (like in ultrix sfcorder) to change the order, 
that first /etc/hosts is used and then the nameserver.
