network connections dying from inactivity

When I rlogin into our rs/6000, or out from it, and leave the terminal
sitting for a while, the connection is broken and leaves me at my local
shell prompt.  I'd really like to disable this, or at least lengthen the
timeout period.  Any ideas how?
