I/O possible - what does this error message mean?

On one of our A/UX machines, I get a weird message:

I/O possible

and then my terminal is screwed up. I have to type

	reset^J

(note the ^J instead of hitting return since it doesn't recognize ^M as and
end of line until it is reset).

How can I stop this? Why does it happen?
