uncompress/zcat & kermit flakeyness??

I seem to be unable to get "compress/uncompress/zcat", as distributed with
A/UX 2.0, to work successfully on files "compress"ed on other machines. I've
acquired "...tar.Z" and "...shar.Z" files that, when uncompressed,
have directory checksum errors in the 1st case, or fail to "unwrap" in the
later case.

If I uncompress these files on another machine (Vax 11/780, BSD 4.2), and then
transfer them to my A/UX system, everythin ng seems fine What a nuisance!

Anybody else?

On a separate problem, A/UX 2.0's "kermit" will not do wildcard SENDs (e.g,
send *.c). I acquired a source for kermit elsewhere which, when compiled,
initially had the same behavior. I tracked the problem down to an issue
of SYS V vs. BSD file structures. By compiling all the source modules as
SYSV, EXCEPT for the module handling the file manipulations, compiling it
as BSD4, kermit works fine. (Note, this problem has been observed on quite
a number of diverse machines - it seems to be endemic).
