Color, Curses, and V/386

Here's another fun one: I know that my Sys V/386 consoles are in color
because I can set the foreground and background from the shell using
tput.  Is there any way to do this from within curses, or do I have
to write my own screen package?  Are there alternatives to curses for
color text-mode applications?
