60mb wangtec problem in SCO Unix

I recently crashed my disk and had to reinstall the SCO unix disks.
I restored the backup tape and now my 60mb tape will not operate
correctly. I get "device busy /dev/rct0" or cpio just hangs. I
reinstall the tape driver and still have the save problem. The
tape will also not rewind when EOT is reached. I must do a tape
reset, tape rewind, and tape reset to start I/O to the next volume.
I must always do a tape reset before I can read/write to any tape.
Running under single user mode seems to work O.K. I am out of things
to look at. Does anybody have any ideas? It sure was working great
before the system crashed.
