Altos tty ports hanging

The place where I am employed has an Altos Series 2000. We constantly have
problems on the ports configured for modems. They work great for a while, but
then decide to start hanging. They usually hang after getting a "bad" connect.
After they are hung there is no way that I have found to unhang them. They act
like the the device driver is hung somewhere in the kernel. I have tried just
about everything from software (e.g. disable/enable, stty, xtty, etc.) to
hardware (i.e. manually toggling signals). This is VERY frustrating! I am
under the belief that Altos has written *junk* tty device drivers! If I am
wrong or someone out there knows what the problem is, I would be forever
grateful to be informed. If it is the device driver that is the problem, does
anyone know where source to one can be obtained for Unix System V. I need to
try something.

Thanks for any information or help!!!
