Instead of looking at the "laptops" you should look at lunchbox type
portable units.  I have one which has a 386sx (my choice, I could have
gotten a 386DX, but didn't want to spend the extra bucks).  It has room
for a 1/2 height hard disk(mine is 65MB, but you can get 150MB half heights),
floppy disk, gas plasma display with ega monitor plug, 2 serial, 1 par, and
two empty 16-bit slots.  The mother board will accept upto 8 meg of memory.

I bought mine for $2500 last year from Tangent Computer Inc(8002236677), and
they did me well.  The same sort of deal should be available at many mail
order firms.
