VM/AX Telnet doesn't work. Help!

Sorry about cross-posting to so many groups, but I couldn't find one group
that seemed to address my problem.

One of the machines I deal with over the Internet recently switched from
VM/CMS to VM/AX.  This machine (I assume it is some sort of IBM 30xx
mainframe) has had TCP/IP protocols and programs patched into it, such as
ftp, SMTP, and telnet.  Things went smoothly until they switched operating
systems.  Now outgoing telnet sessions "require a 327x-type terminal".
This makes things difficult for us dialin people since I don't think the OS
makes any specific provisions for non-hardwired terminals (such as modem
dialins or virtual telnet connections like myself).  Many others have
expressed dissatisfaction with having to use inaccessible on-campus
terminals and the computing center's "tough luck" attitude has been less
than responsive.

My question by now should be obvious:

Is there a workaround, such as fooling VM/AX into thinking I have an
IBM 327x-type terminal, making the telnet program ignore terminal types, or
porting in my own telnet code and compiling it?

Any help than can be offered to get things working again is much appreciated
in advance!
