Equinox Gateways and UUCP on VAXen

Can someone provide help in making _old_ UUCP on a VAXen (BSD 4.2)
dial _out_ through an Equinox(tm) switch?  Silly as it seems, I can
make dial-_ins_ work just fine, but can't seem to get the hang of
getting the switch's attention to get it to dial out through a
modem.
