I use minus: sed 's-/-\\/-g'

Let's see:
		ans=`echo x"$ans" | sed -e 's/.//' -e 's-/-\\/-g'`

(assuming BSD echo)
And now... the portable echo! No `-n', no escapes!

% cat pecho

cat << EOF
$*
EOF
%
