Non-file filesystems

By 1985 or so, there were published accounts of two
pseudo-filesystems that were not really based on an a real
(disk-based) filesystem (the face server and the connection server
from the 8th edition Unix). Despite the common availability of
file server protocols such as NFS, I have heard nothing about other
such filesystems.

I would like to hear about any such filesystems; e-mail
to research!andrew or andrew at research.att.com is preferred but
sillier things have posted to this newsgroup. I will post a summary
after a while.
