backup with compressed cpio files ?

This is what I meant to say.  This is not what came out.  Doug, you
are absolutely right -- here's what I *meant* to say:
        find . -print | cpio -oac | compress > /dev/rmt0

Sorry if I confused anybody besides myself.  :-(
