At the moment we have at least 50 PC compatible's, running
MS-DOS, that are networked together on an ethernet. We have
three types of ethernet boards that we use on the PC's:

		1 - 3COM 501 and 505 card
		2 - EXCELAN 8051-01
		3 - Western Digital

This are cards that allow you to hook up the PC directly into
the ETHERNET using a 15 pin transceiver(ethernet) cable or using
cheap net (coax or thin-ethernet) wire.

These boards can be installed in any of the expansion slots
that are available in your PC.

The 3COM 501, 505 and Western Digital boards work with the FTP
Software PC/TCP Network Software. The PC/TCP programs are a set
of commands that operate under MS-DOS or PC-DOS 2.2 or higher.
These programs provide a set of facilities that make the PC
look like a network host rather than just a simulated
	intelligent terminal.

EXCELAN has its own software for each of its boards as far as I
	know.

Our scenario in our LAB is as follows:

We have a single logical ETHERNET with gateways
both to the Defense Data Network and the OSI Network (OSINET).
The logical LAN is composed of three seperate physical segments
in each of our three buildings here at the Navy Yard. Each of
the LAN segments has a SUN workstation running BSD 4.2 UNIX as
a local server and a bunch of PC's, Zenith 248's, that are
attached to the LAN. The LAN segments are connected with
	intelligent protocol-transparent ETHERNET bridges.

We have a MACINTOSH with an EXCELAN card that we use with the
NCSA Telnet TCP/IP software ($20 per copy).

We use our PC's regularly to get to our SUN's and we also
connect to other hosts out in the network. If you have any
other questions about this give us a call. Hope this helps
	you!! : - )
