NFS group limitation

We are using a Sun 3/260 running SunOS 4.0.1.  We are accessing an NFS
partition via Ethernet on a MicroVax running Ultrix 3.0.  It turns out
that any user that is in more than 8 groups cannot access the
NFS-mounted directory.  Can anyone suggest a way to fix this, or even
explain what is going on?  Thank you, and please reply to me directly.
