How to set up printer Driver

I know this is a vague question but if somebody could explain to me or give
me a pointer to the correct FM I would be very grateful. I'll summarise if
interest warrants.

I have a Hewlett Packard paintjet printer that I have to get working on some
workstations. You can dump text to it without problems - just
cat file > /dev/tty00 (it's a Sony 3410 - they don't have ttya it's called
tty00). But for graphics I must send the file to the printer as a matrix
preceded by special escape characters. At the moment I am writing a program
that analyses a bitmap file and then writes it line by line to /dev/tty00.
Obviously this is not very modular and it doesn't seem to me the right way to
go. How do I set up this paintjet so that I can have a queue, spooling and
a daemon running and all that sort of stuff. I apologise but I'm very ignorant
when it comes to the working of printers in Unix. If there is any software
already written for this stuff for the paintjet please let me know too. I sent
requests to comp.sources.wanted and alt.sources.wanted but I got no response.
I rang up Hewlett Packard but they were extremely uncooperative.

Thankyou for your help.
