FTP Connection reset by peer???

I've been trying to ftp some graphics files from my UNIX account
on one university computer to an account on another UNIX system.
I am able to make the connection via ftp and the file transfer
begins in binary mode. Instead of the usual seconds to a minute
or so, the transfer churns along for 10-15 minutes and then is
abruptly terminated each time with the following message:

	netin: Connection reset by peer
	426 Data connection: broken pipe

The file on my other system is present but is truncated to vary-
ing sizes each time. One was a GIF file and I was able to view
the portion transferred so what it does transmit is not corrupted.

I also tried logging onto a networked DOS machine so I could
simply use DOS copy to copy the file from my UNIX directory to
a DOS floppy. This attempt resulted in "0 files copied." When
I tried copying several files with XCOPY I got the message
"locking violation."

Our UNIX consultant couldn't help. The local UNIX people in the
lab couldn't help. I'm trying to transfer these graphics files
so I can conduct satellite image analysis on a DOS system and
compare the results with those from IPW running on the UNIX{zO ma-
chine. Any help would be MOST appreciated!
