routing error messages on background tasks

I'm running a process in the background, and whenever
an error message is generated, it shows up on all tty's
currently in use!  

I've tried executing the program with a redirection to a file
and /dev/null with no success.  (ie: prog > /dev/null&)

Any suggestions?
