Dell v AT&T

Perhaps the Dells have differing reserved memory areas.  Check
/etc/default/boot for the MEMRANGE parameter.  AT&T provides several
different configurations, named "default.at386", "default.compaq",
etc., each differing slightly in which addresses are verboten.
Try substituting the others for the boot file and see what happens.
