>From reading the DS3100 manual it appears that one of the ports on the DS3100
may implement "DTR" and "DSR" style signals.  This would be  somewhat better
than nothing.

I'm not sure why there's confusion on this point, perhaps the VS3100 doesn't
have this cabability and the similarity between the two has been overplayed.
